We have this funny joke in our family called the "cookie dance." It comes from a home video of my brother Roderick when he was probably 3 or 4. He was eating a cookie and kinda dancing around with it because he was so happy he had the cookie. After watching that home video a few times we realized we all did the cookie dance in our family. When we were eating something really tasty that we enjoyed, we did a little dance or sway around the kitchen. We would notice each other doing it and laugh at each other. Food is a great pleasure to us Davies folk.
In our house, most of our gatherings revolve around food. When we plan a get-together it is centered around what food will be prepared. We love sitting together in the kitchen working on the meals, licking batter, eating dough, snacking on everything. I think the kitchen is one of the most common areas for all of us to be gathered together. I think that I have more memories of eating & baking than of anything else. It's interesting because holidays to us are the recipes we make, the time spent together making them and then, of course, eating them. I guess that is where I got this love of food (& why I chose to be a foods teacher). My mom said that growing up, even though money was always tight, she rarely scrimped on food. It was always a priority to her to have fresh healthy, delicious meals. She never learned to cook growing up and tells funny stories of some of her experimenting after she was married. My dad's mother was a gourmet cook. She was fabulous and it is from her that we got most of our favorite recipes. She is the one who taught my mom to cook. Hence, all of us are now a little spoiled. We call ourselves "food snobs." We like good recipes with fresh ingredients. We would much rather have home-made than store-bought anything. Another funny thing about our family gatherings...there are usually 5 or 6 desserts every time. It seems to be one of the most important parts of the meal. We are excellent bakers in this family. We think long and hard about what desserts to make and there has to always be a chocolate one. To our family, food is a comfort, a friend, a memory, and a tradition... as well as a necessity.
Happy Eating!

My family has delicious food, too... my mother always made stuff from scratch when I was growing up. We never ate ANYTHING from a box (except for Kraft Mac & Cheese on occasion). I didn't even know there was any such thing as "instant potatoes" until I was in college. And when I ate them, I nearly gagged. Who would want to eat that when you can have creamy delicious mashed potatoes??
So many people here have been shocked that I actually cook a full-on dinner EVERY NIGHT for my family. We love food, too. And it has to be good!
