In Defense of Homeschooling

When I started this journey, it was for a variety of reasons. My views have changed as I have continued reading & studying various books and ideas about homeschooling. The whole reasons I am doing this have changed. I LOVE it! I could never turn back now. Not after all of the doctrinal things I have learned about the importance of teaching your own children.

Most people I meet & tell them what I am doing say: That's great, but I could never do that" or If I could start over, I think I would homeschool". These are all things I used to think as well, believe me. I never thought I would homeschool 10 years ago.

If you have ever even had a glimmer of the idea, I have a couple of incredible resources for you. They may change your life in more ways than one- I am not kidding! They have changed mine.

A book I am reading that has blown my mind:

Teach the Children, An Agency Approach to Education by Neil Flinders (super cheap on Amazon) This isn't really about homeschooling, but about how you should bring the principles of agency taught in the gospel into all aspects of education. Read it even if you don't have little kids- it will amaze you! It is a little heavy at times, but well worth the read!

A fabulous podcast by LDS Liberty called In Defense of Homeschooling The link is to their website, but you can also get it on itunes for free.

A movie I watched this last month called Celestial Education. This is a lecture done at a homeschooling conference. I have a copy if you want to borrow it. I have met this incredible woman & heard most of these ideas from her. Her name is Michelle Stone- GREAT woman!!

Another book: A Thomas Jefferson Education This is a style of educationg that is so wonderful!

Just a few resources I thought I would share. Sorry if you don't care a bit about it, or think it's all craziness. I totally understand, but if you do nothing else, read a little about it, or listen to the podcast- it's a quick easy way to get an idea of what I am talking about.

Have a great day!!

So glad you posted those. I was actually going to send you a message and ask you what some of your resources are. I always thought I would homeschool and am leaning that way again. My sister homeschools her seven kids, so I know what she does, but it is good to see what else is out there and other people are using. I'm glad to hear you love it so much.

One question...do you find that it is expensive to get resources and such? It is one thing that holds me back. (my husband is still looking for employment after completing his MBA over a year ago)

Yea Karyn! I only have one homeschooler this year and 2 next year - baby steps!

For money resources that your friend asked about - charter schools are great. You just have to make sure you find a good/understanding educational facilitator and it makes it very doable. They you get roughly $K per year for your educational supplies/classes.

Karyn,
Good for you. I think it's our job as parents to do what we think is best for our family and that is what you are doing. So great that it is working out for you and for you to share what you have learned with others. I thought about Homeschooling Jacob, but we decided on Preschool (Montessori) this fall and I am AMAZED at what he does at school. He is a very, very social child and is thriving in his school environment. For us, this works. (At least for now). But if at some point it doesn't and Homeschooling is a possibility, I'll know who to contact!
